Role models and my goals

As most of you know, seven months ago, I started Kuk Sool Won journey. Originally, my objective was to loose of some weight and learn a martial art in the process. Still, things do change and my goals are becoming organic and have greater substance and value.

Even though I’ve lost 2 and a half stone, I still want to loose some more weight, but my goals have matured with my training. I want to be like Kuk Sa Nim – In Hyuk Suh and Kwan Jahng nim Martin. Those people were awesome! I want to live Kuk Sool Won! I don’t just want to study it, or practice it, but live it. When I look around, it’s very evident that society is missing genuine role models, well that is my belief. These men, in my humble opinion, symbolize and embody what a role model should be.

Before Kuk Sool found me, the most influential person and my greatest role model had been Homer Simpson. For 15 years I modelled my life on Homer, I followed his philosophies on life, consumed vast amounts of food, did as little in the way of exercise, and with the exception of wearing blue trousers and silly shoes, I achieved my goal of a Simpson’s lifestyle. However, whilst this way of life was enjoyable at the time, it had obvious detrimental effects on my physique, health and motivation.

And that’s where Kwan Jahng Nim Martin comes in. He is vibrant, passionate, wise, and great Kuk Sool Won master. Kwan Jahng nim has a wealth of knowledge that he’s more than willing to share with those students wishing learn. This is becoming more and more evident as I attend the Black Belt Club training sessions. During Wednesday’s BBC training, I felt both privileged and honoured, to receive coaching from Kwan Jahng Nim on my techniques. I’ve made the right decision to join the Black Belt Club, and its everything I hoped it would be.

So I have happily said goodbye to Homer, and I’ve got a new role model. Only this time, he is willing to help me become the very best that I can be. I know I’m going to be challenged, and pushed to my limits and beyond. I might be times when I falter and weaken, but his guiding influence, unending enthusiasm and passion, will always be on hand to bring me back on track and help me realise my goals.
