Hints and tips for successful sparring

I’ve only been sparing for only a short while now, about seven months, but I enjoy the challenge and excitement when I’ve sparred successfully. During this time I’ve accumulated a few tips and strategies to spar effectively. When sparring there are key elements to keep in mind, which will help you be successful in your attacks, counter attacks and defensive techniques. Although, not set in stone, they are useful for many situations, and have been helpful in my own training.

Never, ever take your eyes off your opponent, eye to eye contact is your target. Avoid looking where you intend to strike as you give your attack away to your opponent. Use your peripheral vision when fighting to enable you to see the opponent’s whole body. This way you will be able to read your opponent’s intentions.

Keep your elbows close, so positioned, that your chest is protected at all times. Keep your arms mobile and fluid, ready to block and attack.

When defensive, don’t move back in a straight line. Counter with a punch or kick, stepping forward stopping your opponent’s technique, or sidestepping is best. If you’re not in the way, you won’t get hit.

Don’t stand still or flat footed, and move in a circular motion. Be unpredictable, for if you’re stationary for too long, you’re an easy target.

And where did I get these tips…..from sometimes painful, and yet enjoyable experience. I’ve just got to remember these myself….
