Fizzy drinks, an alternate point of view

I’ve been leading a changed and much healthier lifestyle. Yet, despite my ever increasing protests, Katie, my youngest daughter is an avid drinker of Coca Cola. So I did a little research into the impact that the daily litre she consumes has, in a vain hope that she might change to water or at least diet cola.

When you drink a cola, or in fact any other non-diet carbonated flavoured drink, your body is hit with about 60ml or 10 teaspoons of sugar for every 350ml consumed. Under normal circumstances, your body would react negatively to this. However we don’t immediately vomit from all this extra sugar because the phosphoric acid cuts the flavour back allowing us to keep it down.

Your blood sugar level spikes, creating insulin burst. To which your liver responds, by turning any sugar into fat. The caffeine is absorbed by your body, causing your pupils to dilate, and your blood pressure to rise, not good if your hypertensive. Your body increases its dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centre of your brain, this gets you hooked, and wanting another hit.

Eventually the caffeine’s diuretic properties show effects and you’ll find yourself needing to pee. This depletes the essential calcium, magnesium, zinc, sodium, electrolytes and water your body needs to function healthy. The decrease in calcium can result in reduced bone mass, which can contribute to broken bones in children and can lead to osteoporosis later in life. Finally, your body will experience a sugar crash, you’ll become irritable and sluggish.

So why not replace your fizzy cola with:

Water, flat or fizzy. Your body need lots of water to help flush out toxins, aid digestion, and to keep our joints lubricated.

Green tea,  provides a great source of anti-oxidants. Plus, it is also known to lower cholesterol. In addition, herbal teas have many healing properties and they do great without sugar or honey.

Vegetable juice, low calorie, great source of nutrients, vitamins, energy, antioxidants, and fibre. Get a juicer and you can make it at home.
